Nihi Sumba Island is an eco-friendly resort in an idyllic setting providing the perfect escape for couples on a romantic getaway, surfers searching for the perfect break and families and friends looking for adventure.

Located off the beaten track on the remote Indonesian island of Sumba, a one hour flight from Bali, Nihi Sumba was voted #1 hotel in the world by Travel + Leisure for two years running.

On “The Edge of Wildness” the resort offers rolling countryside, white sand beaches, turquoise waters and the exclusive Occy’s Left surf break. Guests can spend their days surfing, paddle boarding, snorkeling, fishing, hiking, horse riding, relaxing and exploring.

A definite must is the one-of-a-kind “NihiOka Spa Safari” starting with a 90-minute trek through lush landscapes, rice fields and a traditional Sumbanese village.  Once completed, you’ve earned yourself some serious relaxation time and guests are pampered with their choice of spa treatments. Don’t worry, you won’t have to trek back in your blissful post-spa state! Cars are available to drive you back to the resort as the sun sets.

So where do you stay? The resort has 27 villas with a total of 38 rooms in one, two, three, four or five-bedroom layouts, each with their own private pool. There is even a two-story tree house for you to live out your childhood dreams, Robinson Crusoe style! Each villa is beautifully decorated and offers indoor/outdoor areas, five-star amenities, ocean views and private butler service.

As far as dining goes, three meals a day are included in the price of your room and the emphasis is on home-grown, organic foods. Ombok is the social hub with amazing wave front views whilst Nio Beach Club allows you to dine with your feet in the sand.

One of the nicest things about Nihi Sumba is its dedication to giving back to the local community. Having lived on the island of Bali, I am a huge fan of hotels who strive to preserve the local environment and help the local community. The Sumba Foundation is committed to reducing poverty on the island of Sumba and works on village based projects to establish clean water, educational programs and reducing the effects of malaria. Kudos to Nihi Sumba!
